Conversation Analysis - How People Talk

This is a new Blog to share ideas on how to teach intelligent device to engage in real time conversation as human being. To engage in conversational interaction as human's do, requires understanding the dynamic properties of conversation and how to reproduce those properties or qualities.

A "Fundamental Unit of Analysis" is essential to all scientific endeavors. Consequently; the first step is to identify the Fundamental Unit of Analysis for Conversation.

This is the first step in achieving the goal of generating real time conversational interactions.

Getting right to the point: The Fundamental Unit of Analysis in Conversational Interaction is the "Turn".

A Turn is a point in ones talk when another may or does speak.

Given this definition, one might say, "So, whenever I say anything, or make any sound during a conversation, I am taking a turn, how can that work?" The answer is, "It works because that is how real human being actually interact with one another. You can observe this for yourself, in your daily life, most anytime and anywhere people are talking to one another. So I repeat; whenever a participant to a conversation utters a sound, it is counted as a turn; and what occurs next is a "Turn Transition"; meaning; someone else is talking or uttering some kind of sound at this moment in time.

The reason this works is that people frequently listen while another person is speaking, they are quiet, and do not make any sounds at all. Which in itself is an interesting phenomenon; however, we will leave that for later, and move forward with a deeper examination of  "Turns" and how turns work. this will allow us to build a solid analytical framework that is independent of culture, language, gender or age.
